The Washington Center
-
The Washington Center located at 1001 G Street in Washington, DC is headquarters to Quadrangle Management who own and manage several downtown DC properties. The existing roof was a ballasted EPDM membrane and in need of replacement due to age. SK&A was hired by Quadrangle to design the roof replacement. The new roof will be an IRMA modified bitumen membrane system. Simpson was chosen to handle the roof replacement and work started at the end of summer 2003.
Some of the challenges of this roof replacement were the lack of access, the need of a crane for all trash and debris removal from the roof, the multiple levels, and the great amount of curbs, penetrations, and ductwork that needed to be done. In addition to the roof we also waterproofed a pavered terrace enclosed by railing.

Both phases were completed during the summer of 2004. The work encompassed 1,557 squares of roofing and a mid-June to mid-August schedule requirement. Excellent coordination and communication with the school system key personnel overseeing the project and the proper planning and scheduling allowed us to complete both phases of this project 1 year ahead of time.
