Built-Up Roofing System (BURs) are a type of commercial roofing that have been in use for over 100 years. Built-Up Roofing is made up of multiple layers of material that are laminated together. These roofing systems have a lifespan of 15-30 years. Typically, BURs are created with 4 basic components that are layered many times in a variety of combinations:

  • Base Sheet – Fiberglass, asphalt coated organic sheets, or asphalt coated venting sheets
  • Felts/Fabrics – Coal or tar-saturated felt, cotton, or burlap
  • Bitumen – Asphalt, coal tar, or lap cement
  • Surfacing Component – Gravel, asphalt, or mineral coating.

There are several different types of Built-Up Roofing, including Smooth Asphalt, Ballasted, and Cold Built-Up Roofs. Each are useful in a variety of settings, depending upon the construction of the building.
