What is Metal Roofing?

Metal roofing, being one of the oldest types of roofing, has been used for centuries to provide waterproofing and architectural appeal for commercial buildings of all kinds.

While metal roofing was originally manufactured and fabricated from metals such as lead or copper, technology has evolved in the modern era where metal roofing panels are fabricated from equipment resulting in thicker metals fabricated from steel and aluminum.

Metal roofing systems are separated into two categories of application: architectural metal roofing, where the metal roofing is installed over a substrate, and structural metal roofing systems, where the panels are designed to be installed over open framing, where engineering and spanning characteristics are taken into consideration during the design phase of a project.

Metal panels are also installed as cladding systems on the exterior of buildings, whether installed as a wall cladding panel, a screen wall panel, or a mansard panel application.

Metal panels used for roofing and cladding can be specified in flat, standing seam, batten seam, trapezoidal, and flush interlocking panels.

Standing Seam Metal Roofing

Available in multiple different profiles to provide a desired aesthetic, standing seam metal roofing (SSMR) panels bring an immediate impact to the look and feel of a building. SSMR systems are available in different metals, attachment frequencies, underlayment types, insulation values, and colors.

Designs for the installation or replacement of a SSMR system is almost always a custom job. It is important to discuss all of the performance characteristics desired, and coordinate the installation with the review of an experienced roofing contractor.

SSMR systems are also available in retrofit applications, where a new SSMR system is installed over the top of an existing system with the utilization of a designed sub girting system.

Wall Panels

Many standing seam metal roofing panels, along with other panels such as flush panels, can be installed vertically over sheathing or open framing to provide a cladding system for a commercial building.

Wall panels are installed with a designed attachment frequency and underlayment product to provide a watertight cladding system for the building envelope.

Wall panels, much the same as SSMR systems, require custom design and fabrication. It is important to consult with an experienced and qualified contractor prior to moving forward with your project.
